This benchmark Châteauneuf of Bois de Boursan is as traditional a Châteauneuf as they come, drawn from 27 different vineyard sites within some of the most favored sites within the appellation, all of which were some of the first Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards to be farmed organically by Jean-Paul’s father over forty years ago.  Jean-Paul’s decision to balance the inclusion of full stems with a portion of de-stemmed fruit depending upon the vintage’s growing conditions [2017 saw 20% de-stemmed fruit]; a vinification still in large concrete vat as opposed to stainless steel, over a long extended vatting period [25 days in 2017] without any pigeage or punching down of the cap; followed by a patient lengthy élevage in ancient foudre and demi-muid barrels; all serve to ensure that Châteauneuf’s inherent power, this wine’s enormous scale size and structure, its rugged feral earth and forest intensity and myriad spices are presented in a wine still of grace, with an overarching air of delicacy and nuance about the whole.  This combination can sound impossible to be reconciled harmoniously until you have a Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf in the glass before you.  2017 presents this marriage of power and grace vividly, in a wine that is aromatically forward and nuanced with a palate impression that is ample, generous and offers integrated ripe tannins.  Classic Bois de Boursan!
