As we transition out of Summer it's time to have some new fun with Fall cocktails. This Autumn Harvest Sangria recipe is made with red wine, seasonal fruit & spices. It's a delicious cocktail for celebrating the glory of Autumn!
You don't need to splurge on the red wine but start with a dry and full-bodied wine that you would actually drink (think California red blends or Rioja from Spain). Brandy is the traditional fortifier - we recommend using Mr. Boston Blackberry Brandy. After tinkering with our recipe we found that a hint of an orange liqueur like Cointreau or Combier gives a welcome citrus taste. Orange juice is a must but remember to use one that's not pulpy.
As for the layer of chopped fruit that typically garnishes sangria, almost anything goes. We recommend sliced apples, oranges, nectarines, blueberries, cranberries and blackberries. Once you add everything to a pitcher, give it a good stir and stash it in the fridge for 24 hours. By the time happy hour arrives the next day the mix will be well chilled and mellowed.
In a large pitcher combine:
1 (750ml) bottle of wine
1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup orange liqueur
3/4 cup orange juice
2 cups sliced fruit
2-3 cups of seltzer
Garnish glass with cinnamon stick and orange wedge.
